Today we walked to the nearest river, La Posa, to pick up trash.
Hoy fuimos caminando al rio mas cerca, La Posa, para recoger basura.
We also made cards that talked about why we shouldn't throw trash because it ends up in the rivers. We handed them out to the people who live near the river.

This week grades 3 through 10 have been doing standardize testing. Sixth grade shares a wall with us. Fifth and Fourth grades are on our other sides. The walls in this building are not sound proof. So we had to have class in the library. "At first it was hard for me to focus" said Josue, "but then I got used to it." Esta semana tercero hasta segundo de bachillerato estuvieron tomando examenes. We are working really hard to get through the end of the school year. We have two full weeks left of learning and then the last week is Service Week where we will do service projects everyday.

We are learning some very valuable lessons in Second grade. We are learning how to care for things whether they are ours or not. We are also learning to always tell the truth and that writing on anything but paper is not okay.

Friday was the spelling bee. Crismeiry, Geremias, Adrian and Josue were all competitors against some of the students from first grade. Josue won first place. It was fun to cheer on our friends.

Last week a dentist came one one of the work teams. He taught us all how to brush our teeth and gave us all fluoride. Yuck!

With the other work team we interviewed some of the people and made a book about them.

Today we learned and practiced measuring long distances with our yard sticks.

Also today, we learned about the third thing of matter - Gas! We did an experiment with bags full of air to learn how to describe gas.

Today we got some love from California. Grades 1 - 6 recieved buttons that said "You are Loved." In Second grade we talked about how much people can love us like our families & our friends, but how God's love is so much bigger than that. We learned how God the Father loves us so much that he sent his ONLY son Jesus to die for us! That love is bigger than any human love!

Hoy recibimos amor de California. Primer hasta sexto grado recibieron butones que dicen "Eres amado." En segundo grado hablamos de como las personas nos pueden amar, como nuestras familias y amigos, pero el amor de Dios es mucho mas grande que eso. Aprendimos como Dios el Padre, nos ama tanto que mando a su UNICO hijo Jesus para morir para nosotros! Ese amor es mucho mas grande que cualquier amor humano!

After 3 hours on a bus, and a snack, we went and saw animals we have never seen before!

There was lots of trash at the zoo.

We've been working very hard on drawing our animals. Today we finally finished and picked our very best drawing. We were so tired of drawing our animal, but it is what helped us to do a great job.

Today we started work on our animals. We blew up balloons, tied them to string, and then got really messy! We covered them with newspaper dipped in glue, water & flour. On Monday they will be firm enough to begin adding the rest of the parts of the animal, like the arms, legs & head.

Vacation was so much fun. We spent two weeks with our families. We ate lots of food like BBQ'd pork, rice and legumes, potatoe salad and apples. The three kings brought us presents on January 6th and we loved the toys. "I am so excited to be back at school" says Alberlin (pictured).

Las vacaciones fueron muy divertidas. Pasamos dos semanas con nuestras familias. Comimos mucha comida como puerco asado, arroz y juan dules, ensalada rusa y manzanas. Los tres reyes magos nos trajeron muchos regalos el día 6 de enero y los encantamos mucho. "Estoy muy feliz regresar al colegio" dice Alberlin (aquí en la foto).

Oh my goch! The end of the year has been crazy. After Olga, another storm that flooded many parts of our town and canceled more school, we had so much to do. We had a school wide Christmas presentation where our part was to sing and do a drama. We threw a party for all the teachers to say Thank you. We had to memorize part of an acrostic poem we wrote with the the words "Thank you for serving." Then we had a party and got our grades. It's been too crazy!

Ai, madre mia! El fin del ano ha sido loco. Despues de Olga, otra tormenta que inundio muchas partes de nuestro pueblo y cancelo las clases, teniamos mucho que hacer. Tuvimos una presentacion navideno donde tuvimos que cantar y hacer un drama. Hicimos una fiesta para los profesores para decir gracias. Tuvimos que memorizar una parte de un poema acrostico que hicimos con las palabras "Gracias por servir." Despues tuvimos una fiesta y nos entregaron las notas. Ha sido una locura!

Fall 07 Outdoor Education Week

On Wednesday we went to the Presa Taveras. This is a dam with a lake. We investigated the water, the plants and the animals around the lake. We described the lake using nouns and adjectives. We learned about what contaminates a lake and how we can prevent contamination.
On Thursday we went to La Posa. This is the river near our school. We investigated the same things as the lake. We also wrote an acrostic poem about the river and picked up LOTS of trash.
On Friday we went to JUCUM (Youth With A Mission base) to investigate the pond they have there. We investigated the same things as the lake and river, as well as wrote an acrostic poem about it.

We compared all three bodies of water, examining the similarities and differences. Then as a reward for all our hard work, we got to swim and play in the pool that JUCUM has on the base. Don’t forget to check out all the pictures at: www.flickr.com/photos/arat316

The Store La Tienda

Today we had our store. After one month of earning Doulos dollars by good behavior, getting our folders signed, serving others, being quiet or doing anything to glorify God, we got to buy from the Second Grade store. We are allowed to buy to items and we have to use our Math to figure out the total and the change.

Hoy tuvimos la tienda. Despues de un mes de ganar dolores de Doulos por comportamiento bueno, firmando los folderes, sirviendo a los demas, estando en silencio o cual quier otra cosa para glorificar a Dios, podemos comprar de la tienda de segundo grado. Podemos comprar dos cosas y usamos nuestra matematica para interar del total y la vuelta.

The last few weeks have been a blur. We’ve been trying to catch up from when Miss Tara was sick. We are fast learners and we love to do activities. We are learning about subtraction, Australian landforms, animals needs and practicing time of day vocabulary in English class. We get our report cards on Friday. “I’m a little nervous” says Noemi. Soon we will be having Outdoor Education Week where we study about water. “I’m so excited to go to the lake” says Ben. Please pray for our friend Adrian (pictured with Miss Tara). He is having a hard time getting used to our school and can be violent or emotional. We know God is powerful and that Adrian is a precious child of our powerful God.

Las ultimas semanas pasaron muy rapido. Hemos estado intentando a recuperar el trabajo de cuando Miss Tara estuvo enferma. Somos aprendizejes rapidos y nos encanta hacer las actividades. Estamos aprendiendo resta, las formas de la tierra en Australia, los animales y sus necesidades y vocabulario de tiempo en la clase de ingles. Recibiremos los reportes de progreso el viernes. “Estoy un poco nerviosa” dice Noemi. Pronto tendremos La Semana de Educaccion Ambiental donde vamos a estudiar agua. “Estoy my emocionado para ir al lago” dice Ben.
Por favor, de orar por nuestro amigo Adrian (en la foto con Miss Tara). Le ha costado mucho acostumbrarse a nuestro colegio y a veces es violento o muy emocional. Sabemos que Dios es poderoso y que Adrian es un hijo precioso de ese Dios poderoso.

It's a new school year! It was a rough start since Miss Tara was sick with typhoid fever for a week. But thanks to God, she is now healthy and back at work. We are beginning to learn and see new things. Please pray for us this year.

The Zoo! ~ El Zologico!

We went to the zoo in Santo Domingo on Friday. We had so much fun and learned a lot about how to care for animals. We also learned what is need to make a zoo. Today was the pizza and ice cream party. Second grade recieved it for being the best at spelling between second and third grade. I am very proud of them. They have worked very hard this year and still are. Be on the watch for some awesome projects about Australian animals.

Spelling Bee ~ Competencia de Ortografia

Last Friday was the Spelling Bee between 2nd and 3rd grade. Michelle, Franchira and Daniel were the three finalist for second grade. Michelle tied for first with David - a third grader and Franchira got second place. "My favorite part was after I won they lifted me onto thier shoulders" said Michelle. Franchira said "My favorite part was spelling the really hard words." Second grade also won for the best class spelling! I am so proud of my great spellers!

El viernes pasado fue el concurso de ortografia entre segundo y tercero. Michelle, Franchira y Daniel eran los represantes de segundo grado. Michelle impato para primer premio con David - un estudiante de tercero y Franchira gano segundo. "Mi parte favorita fue despues de que gane, cuando me levantaron en sus hombros" dijo Michelle. Franchira dijo "Mi parte favorita fue deletrear las palabras dificiles." Segundo tambien gano en la competencia de curso. Estoy muy orgullosa de mis estudiantes inteligentes!

We did a drama for Pre-school through 6th grade. It was called Wake Up, Groundhog! It was very fun and we loved being animals for awhile.

The Knight at Dawn
Characters:
Jack: Jack is in third grade. Ms. Watkins is his teacher. Jack is a planner. Jack prefers to read. Annie: Annie prefers to see it for real.
Guards: Red –Face-Squinty-and Mustache are the guards who took Annie and Jack to the dungeon. The Knight: The knight is going inside the castle for a feast. The knight has a visor, armor and a black horse. The knight is good to Annie and Jack because the knight saves Annie and Jack.

Settings:
Tree House: Jack and Annie think that there are people in the tree house.
Castle: They went to the castle. The castle has cool misty air. The castle has a moat. It has a wind mill. There is a hawk house. The castle has a guard. It has a Court yard. The court yard has a well. It has a giant fire place, antlers, and rugs hung on the stone walls. Flowers cover the floor. The dogs are fighting for the bone.
The armory: Inside the armory are weapons. There are breast plates, leg plates, arm plates, helmets, shields, spears, and swords, cross bows, clubs, and battle- axes. Annie and Jack are trapped in the armory. Chains are hanging from the filthy walls. Water dripped in puddles. There are rats in the dungeon.
Secret Passage: Secret passage was the tunnel. Secret passage has a trapdoor. A precipice is the end of the secret passage.
The Tunnel: The tunnel was damp and creepy. The moat is water outside the castle. The moat is cold and black. Jack thought there was a crocodile.

Plot: Jack woke up. He saw the clock. It was 5:30. He saw the book. Annie came. In Then Annie saw the book. They decide to go to the woods. Then Annie went up to the tree house. Jack read about the knight and the castle. Annie said to Jack that she wanted to go to the castle to see the real dawn. Annie went inside. Jack ran to get Annie. The guard said to stop and found Annie. Annie and Jack went to a great hall. The man saw Jack and Annie. Annie and Jack ran to the hall way because they were scared. Annie and Jack ran into a room. Inside the room was armor and weapons. It was the armory. Jack put on the helmet. The visor closed and he couldn’t see. A person came and took off his helmet. Three huge men took Annie and Jack to the dungeon. They told Annie and Jack to die. Annie used the flashlight to scare the men. They left the dungeon. Annie and Jack were chased. Annie and Jack went to the store room. Annie and Jack found a trapdoor. They went inside. There were bats. The flashlight went out. Jack found the precipice. Jack fell down. Jack fell down into the moat and had to swim. Jack thought that there was a crocodile. Annie and Jack stopped at the edge. They saw the knight. The knight put Annie and Jack into the tree house. Then Annie pointed to the picture. Then the tree house started to spin. Then suddenly there was silence. The tree house was home. Annie and Jack ran home. They went to their room. Jack saw a book mark had the same letter M as the gold medallion.
